Cottage Food Kitchen is a Plainfield-based initiative dedicated to empowering local food entrepreneurs by helping them start legal, home-based food businesses under New Jersey's cottage food law. We bridge the gap between informal food makers and formal markets by guiding them through certification, business setup, and operational launch. Our platform offers education, coaching, and marketplace access, including a presence at the local farmers market. We aim to ignite microenterprise growth, create jobs, and strengthen the local economy through food entrepreneurship.

Position Summary
As a Finance & Operations Analyst at Cottage Food Kitchen, you'll play a hands-on role in supporting and growing a program that helps food entrepreneurs legally launch home-based businesses. You'll work directly with founders, vendors, and municipal partners to track performance, onboard new clients, and ensure smooth operation at our farmers market location.
Key Responsibilities
- Help design and run the farmers market as a real-world operational hub
- Assist in onboarding local entrepreneurs into our platform
- Lead customer communication and support
- Analyze financial data, program performance, and impact metrics
- Track outreach and follow-up with client leads
- Build marketing campaign lists and contribute to content
- Gain working knowledge of NJ cottage food laws and regulations
- Support grant tracking and nonprofit/government reporting
- Work collaboratively with founders on key projects
Ideal Candidate Has
- Interest in entrepreneurship, food systems, small business, or public policy
- Willingness to learn basic marketing, finance, and operations tools
- Strong communication and project follow-up skills
- Comfort with spreadsheets and customer tracking tools (training provided)

In New Jersey, the cottage food law allows you to sell non-time/temperature control (non-TCS) foods — meaning items that don’t need refrigeration to stay safe. These include:
Baked goods (like cookies, bread, cakes, muffins)
Candy and confections
Dried herbs and teas
Popcorn and dry mixes
Jams and jellies made with high-acid fruits
Roasted coffee and nuts
You cannot sell: meat, fish, dairy-based goods (like cream pies or cheesecakes), or anything requiring refrigeration.

In October 2021, New Jersey launched the Cottage Food Operator Permit, empowering residents to legally sell homemade, non-perishable foods directly to consumers.
Since then, 1,861 permits have been issued statewide, with 1,338 currently active as of May’25.
